THE AIM ·of this edition o f Othello is to ensure that the reader fully understands
and appreciates the play. It explains the text in detail. Points o f difficulty often
taken for granted or touched on inconclusively are here treated at length. And
besides dealing with such matters as archaic language and allusions to bygone
custom, the notes explain briefly certain rare words still current in English
which happen to occur in the play (e.g; sequent, wheeling).
