The Leipzig publisher Bernhard Tauchnitz was among the most important international publishers of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. Tauchnitz’s innovation was to publish new titles in English, typically within a short time of their issue in England and the US, in markets outside of the UK and its colonies. In some cases, titles (such as Dickens’ Martin Chuzzlewit) the Tauchnitz Edition came out before the English edition, or after, but with changes by the authors (thus the literary interest in Tauchnitz Editions).
