No other work of fiction of non-Western origin has had a greater impact on Western culture than the Arabian Nights. Besides supplying pleasant entertainment to generations of readers and listeners, right up to the present the work has been an inexhaustible mine of inspiration for all kinds of creative activities. At the same time, it has contributed decisively to the West’s perception of the “Orient” as the essential Other and, hence, to the West’s definition of its own cultural identity. Yet the Arabian Nights were not primarily perceived and treated as alien.
