The second journey
Maria Lindgren Leavenworth
The Second Journey: Travelling in Literary Footsteps explores the concept of “second journeys,” in which contemporary travelers follow in the footsteps of earlier travelers and writers. The book examines how previous travel narratives influence later journeys and how travelers reinterpret familiar places through new experiences and perspectives. Drawing on case studies involving scientific expeditions, journeys through West Africa, and travels inspired by literary figures, the book explores themes of travel writing, authenticity, originality, intertextuality, gender, biography, and cultural memory. It offers a scholarly study of a distinctive form of travel literature and examines how contemporary travel narratives engage with and transform earlier accounts.
