Travels into Print
Innes M. Keighren, Charles W. J. Withers & Bill Bell
Travels into Print: Exploration, Writing, and Publishing with John Murray, 1773–1859 examines how accounts of travel and exploration in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Britain were transformed from travelers’ experiences and manuscripts into published books. The authors focus on the influential publishing house of John Murray and explore the relationships between travelers, authors, editors, publishers, and printers. The book examines questions of credibility and truth in travel narratives, the process of becoming an author, book production, illustrations and other paratextual materials, the commercial marketplace of travel literature, and the role of printed travel accounts in creating geographical knowledge. Drawing on extensive archival material from the John Murray Archive, the book offers an interdisciplinary study combining travel writing, historical geography, publishing history, and book history.
