Tomoe Kumojima Victorian Women’s Travel Writing on Meiji Japan: Hospitable Friendship examines the travel writings of Victorian women who visited Meiji Japan and explores their encounters, friendships, and cultural relationships with Japanese people. The book focuses particularly on the writings of Isabella Bird, Mary Crawford Fraser, and Marie Stopes, examining how these women represented Japan and Japanese society through their travel narratives. Kumojima also explores themes of cross-cultural friendship, gender, race, imperialism, identity, female agency, and Anglo-Japanese relations. By examining unpublished correspondence and previously untranslated Japanese literary sources, the book demonstrates how Victorian women travellers challenged conventional Orientalist stereotypes and created alternative representations of Japan through their literary work.
